Nuclear Receptors in Metazoans: when evolution meets disruption and back again

NRs are triggered by specific ligands, including hormones, morphogens and dietary compounds, thus modulating the transcription of downstream target genes. The coordinated action of NRs and their ligands controls many aspects of physiological homeostasis, including development and reproduction. Our knowledge on the diversity and functional landscape of NRs in invertebrate species is tremendously scattered. The lack of a systematic approach and the poor taxonomic sampling are still problematic, with a functional comparative phylogenetic pipeline still missing. We investigate NR diversity and function in selected Metazoan species, to learn their evolution and additionally anticipate and predict adverse the effects caused by chemicals at the ecosystem level.
